Accent Group to take Platypus chain to Asia

When shoe retailer Accent Group bought 11 Platypus Shoe stores in 2007 chief executive Daniel Agostinelli loved its shoes but wasn’t a fan of the brand name.

“I actually felt quite embarrassed saying ‘good morning Platypus’,” Agnostinelli, who had joined from Sanity Music stores, toldĀ AFR Weekend.

“But we’ve managed to make the word Platypus synonymous with sneakers and kids are voting with their key cards.”

Platypus is now one of the largest sellers of sneakers and casual footwear in Australia, with 96 stores selling most of the company’s licensed brands including Vans, Converse, Birkenstock, Dr Martens, Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Timberland and Sperry.
